Depth - School of Athens

The School of Athens by Raphael

This weeks theme is depth and I have selected The School of Athens by Raphael as a visual representation. The great thing about the artwork I chose for this week is that it is a great example of both overlapping and linear perspective to help create the illusion of depth. To start, you can see overlapping if you take a closer look at the groups of people throughout the artwork. The way this creates depth is by overlapping the forms of the people, it appears as certain people are closer to you and some are farther away. Linear perspective is created by the angle at which the artists places the viewer makes the image seem as if the background recedes to a single vanishing point behind the two central people.

You can find this artwork at the library in Art History, Third Edition by Marilyn Stokstad.
